Without a doubt Ampalaya or bitter gourd (Momordica Charantia) is one of the best recommended medicinal herbs for people suffering from Diabetes Mellitus. But how does it lower blood glucose (sugar) levels? According to research, Ampalaya contains insulin-like properties called Polypeptide-P as well as Charantin. The latter acts by increasing blood glucose (sugar) uptake by the cells, while the former primarily triggers the production of beta cells in the pancreas which are responsible for producing the body's insulin. Sufficient amount of insulin decreases the body's concentration of excess blood sugar.
