Ariadna from Colombia maintains her composure (left) as the crown was taken away from her to the rightful winner (Philippines). |
The Filipina beauty outlasted 79 other contestants from around the world who converged in the sin city with the hopes to win the most coveted crown. Pia was crowned by the outgoing titleholder Paulina Vega Dieppa from Colombia.
An inch closer in nabbing the top spot was Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo who eventually placed as First Runner-Up, followed by the equally stunning contender from USA who settled as the Second Runner-Up. Misses Australia (Monika Radulovic) and France (Flora Coquerel) completed the Top 5.
The Top Ten Finalists are the delegates from Dominican Republic (Clarissa Molina), Japan (Ariana Miyamoto), Thailand (Aniporn Chalermburanawong), Curacao (Kanisha Sluis) and Venezuela (Mariana Jimenez).
While Brazil (Marthina Brandt), Indonesia (Anindya Putri), Belgium (Annelies Toros), South Africa (Refilwe Mthimunye) and Mexico (Wendy Esparza) were fortunate enough to crack through the Top 15.
Pia Wurtzbach now joins the rank of fellow Filipinas Gloria Diaz (Miss Universe 1969) and Margie Moran (Miss Universe 1973) who won the universe's most prestigious crown.
Philippines enjoyed a consecutive semi-final streak since Venus Raj in 2010 and a Top Five spot except in 2014 when Mary Jean Lastimosa failed to advance to the winning circle after making it in the Top 10.
Philippines has two Miss Universe First Runners-Up (1999 and 2012), Four Miss Universe Third Runners-Up (1963, 1980, 2011 and 2013) and two Miss Universe Fourth Runners-Up (1975 and 2010), not to mention a series of Semi-Final placements.
